Parsonsfield: Box Shop Trail in Parsonsfield Is Officially Opened — The abandoned Industrial Box and Lumber Company site located adjacent to the Ossipee River in Parsonsfield, Maine came alive September 19th with enthusiastic hikers. They came to take part in the ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the Box Shop Trail, a 2 ½ mile loop that follows the Ossipee River before entering a heavily wooded area. The hike was enjoyed by the Town of Parsonsfield Selectmen and 20+ hikers from Sacopee Healthy Communities Coalition. The Coalition is sponsored by the Sacopee Valley Health Center and has been offering healthy activities for over a decade as part of its commitment to improving the health and well being of the community. For hike information, contact Peter 207-625-7833.

The former Industrial Box and Lumber Company operated a mill on the site for over 100 years. The mill and outbuildings were abandoned in 1998 and the Town of Parsonsfield acquired the parcel in 2003 due to non-payment of taxes. EPA funding for a Brownfield’s Clean-up resulted in the site being declared free of hazardous materials.

Besides the Box Shop Trail, town officials hope to develop the 39.8 acres for additional recreational uses such as playing fields, a canoe/boat launch and picnic area.
